China has created a nuclear battery for smartphones. The charge will last for 50 years

Chinese startup Betavolt has announced the BB100 compact nuclear battery.

Its dimensions are 15x15x5 mm (smaller than a coin). It can produce 100 microwatts of power and a voltage of 3 V. According to the company, this is enough for 50 years of continuous operation.

The development is based on a semiconductor layer of artificial diamond 10 micrometers thick. The crystalline structure generates electricity using the energy released by the decaying isotope of nickel.

The company intends to establish commercial production of these batteries for use in smartphones, drones, medical devices, aerospace and others. It is claimed that the development is “absolutely safe and has no external radiation”, and can also withstand temperatures from -60° to 120°.
